I tried to fit in as many thrilling or spooky reads as possible this month!
@stephenking ‘s The Shining and Dr Sleep were by far my favorite reads this month.
And Wings of Madness was a surprising favorite too 👏

It’s not a Kristin Hannah book if I haven’t absolutely bawled my eyes out at least once.
I think my heart just broke over and over again for the main character Elsa. What a complicated, harsh, desperate life she led. Her perseverance can’t be outmatched. I love how her daughter Loreda would push her.

Absolutely EPIC Finale to The Bridge Kingdom romantasy series. WOW.
No Spoilers but DLJ really took us out with a BANG on this one. So many twists, battling, revenge, and allll the tension. The dramatic audio on @audible was great and really heightened the drama.
This is one of my top Romantasy series ❤️

✨Leave Me Behind by K.M. Moronova ✨

Bully, Dark Romance in a military special ops setting. This one was an impulse buy for me and I went in blind. The MMC was aggravating and very wishy-washy. Did he hate her or not?! The FMC was likeable until the last 25% of the book and that whole scene was…. unfortunate.
This was not the dark romance I wanted to fulfill my mood.

I’m obsessed. I loved book 2 even more than The Shining! This seriously was a psychological thriller at its best. The mind games in Dr Sleep are wild. Rose the Hat? Such an intense villain.
Without spoiling anything, I loved the character progression of Dan into adulthood and introducing Abra into this world. If The Shining was dipping your toe in, Dr Sleep was a cannonball.
We watched the movie and while it didn’t 100% follow the book, I think it perfectly pulled in what was missing from the first movie and tied up the storyline together.
My favorite parts?
📦 The boxes in Dan’s mind.
✍️ The chalkboard communication
🐈 Azzie the cat

I watched a clip from an interview with Stephen King and he said he was a “functioning alcoholic” while writing The Shining and “many years sober” when he wrote Dr Sleep. That was a cool fact and also made me look at Danny on a deeper level knowing the author could relate so personally to his character.

Cozy fantasy with loveable characters, funny banter and found family. Zombie rooster who was accidentally resurrected? whoops, now we have a new character!
Sera just wants to do her job but grumpy Luke shows up at the inn with his little sister Posy and everything changes.
Perfect slow-burn between Sera & Luke and I especially enjoyed their whimsical magic.
This was another perfect witchy October read/listen.🎧

Dare I say this is my FAV of the Sparrow Falls series?? Because I feel like I’m not alone in saying we’ve all been waiting for Kyler’s story!

So far, this is one of my favorites from SK. Let spooky October continue with this gripping physiological horror.
Jack, his wife Wendy and their son Danny stay in the infamous Overlook Hotel as caretakers for the winter season.
I was enthralled with the character ARC of Jack. His traumatic childhood, his struggle with alcohol in adulthood and then his resulting mental struggles (that only increased once he arrived at The Overlook) made Jack someone you empathized with and at the same time hated.

There were only a couple times I had to set the book down to take a break 😉 but I looked how thrilling it was. And Hallorann? Loved him and how he looks out for Danny.

We watched The Shining Movie after I finished the book and I have soooo many thoughts. But essentially, the movie doesn’t live up to the book. It’s missing a lot of what (imo) makes The Shining great.

On to Dr Sleep next!

I was hooked from the first chapter. Was it a deep and thought provoking plot? Not necessarily. Was it quick and easy read? Definitely.

This was another busy month for me and I made it through 9 books and had 1 that I DNF 👎

My fav from Sept was (as I expected) Tourist Season by Brynne Weaver.

Disappointing read other than the ARC I DNF, was American Psycho.

Looking forward to some spooky reads in Oct, any recs??

I’m deep in my SK Era right now and fully loving it. Another Holly Gibney mystery and I just love this character. I was introduced to her in The Outsider and immediately knew I wanted to see more from her. A number of storylines come to an intense head in this thrilling murder mystery.
The villains were particularly interesting in this one, their backstories were fascinating.

I’m working my way through King’s backlog and I plan to read The Shining next.

I’m deep in my SK Era right now and fully loving it. Another Holly Gibney mystery and I just love this character. I was introduced to her in The Outsider and immediately knew I wanted to see more from her. A number of storylines come to an intense head in this thrilling murder mystery.
The villains were particularly interesting in this one, their backstories were fascinating.

I’m working my way through King’s backlog and I plan to read The Shining next.

I read The Tourist Season the day after it released and of course I absolutely loved it. As expected, it’s the perfect amount of witty banter, serial k!llers who fall in love and a deeper undertone. The cliffhanger on this is 😮 and I’m so thrilled to hear that Brynne has already finished the next book in the series.

There were times I wasn’t sure they’d make it out of the ‘enemies’ side 🫣. Tate had a traumatic childhood and to keep himself from getting close to anyone, he’s extraordinarily mean. But Gia gets under his barrier and once shes in, Tate can’t let her go.

This is book 3 in the Forbidden Love series and definitely my fav so far. I love a tortured man who only has a soft side for his woman 🫠 ❤️‍🔥

A retired football player moves to a small town in Maine to hide from the press and when Ella meets him, her charm blows him away.
Perfect amount of swoon, spice and sweet love. ❤️

Cozy, fun and sweet with a deeper underlying subplot.
I love the message that you should never give up on your dreams, no matter where you are in life or how old you are.

Wild Reverence by @beccajross

Rebecca Ross is a master storyteller. This story is about the gods and goddess’ and their relationships with one another and their powers. The emotional depth of these characters is powerful. I absolutely loved Matilda’s story and journey discovering her powers and the fight for her mortal love.

🪴The Enchanted Greenhouse by @sarahbethdurst (Spellshop Book 2) 🪴

Oh the WIMSY that Sarah Beth Durst absolutely infuses these books with!! I think I was smiling *almost* the entire time I read the book. I love this world, the original and complex characters and the magical creatures!

Terlu is turned into a statue and put into a closet and I was 😮.
Quiet and caring Yarrow was abandoned on an island and forced to care for all the enchanted greenhouses by himself.
The sentient plants even had strong (and hilarious) personalities.
If you want a light, whimsical and funny read, this world is for you.

I LOVE a playboy who falls hard and completely changes his ways. And not only that, fell for his best friend. I loved the bond between Tia and Logan that so easily slid into romance.
I appreciated the growth from both characters as well as the way they dealt with their messy past.

The writing of V.E. Schwab will pull you under so quickly you don’t even remember that you’re not a fan of vampires. The elegance and depth of this story is so wonderfully beautiful I could not put it down.
I absolutely LOVED The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and this is another fine example of her powerfully poetic writing.

Three women and their Vampire origin stories come together over hundreds of years in this captivating story of love, life and how to survive.

✨The Girl I Was by @jenevaroseauthor ✨

Alexis’ life is falling apart and her lifelong inspirational quotes are no longer helping. As she barrels towards the bottom of every bottle she can find, what she wakes up to find is the last thing she expects.

This main character throughout the majority of the book was appropriately annoying and self-centered. But I think to have the growth that she did, she has to start that low. And it’s definitely not an overnight process to changing your entire personality.
I was hopeful throughout that she would see how honestly terribly she was behaving and thank GOODNESS we got somewhere.

This is not Jeneva’s typical suspense thriller book and after reading the acknowledgments, I saw that it was actually the first book she wrote! I enjoyed this coming-of-age story.

(Song choice for this post by my fav boy band I used to listen to non-stop when I was younger.)

Honestly, this was such an unexpected 5-star for me. I put this book on hold with Libby and when it came up to read, I’d completely forgotten what it was about.

The entire book is correspondence with Sybil either through email or mail and you see how her life unfolds, regrets she has, and sometimes her innermost thoughts she shares with others.
This hit me deep in some areas and I enjoyed following her journey. The last letter? Absolutely 😭.

A Sherlock Holmes style fantasy mystery with funny banter, hilarious inner dialogue and lots of fascinating characters.
This was our @fable book club pick for July.
I enjoyed this mysterious adventure through a world that has such a unique magic system. Assistant investigator Din is an engraver and he can remember everything that he encounters. What a cool power!
His boss the lead investigator Ana is multifaceted and I truly never got a grip on who she is. I loved her witty comebacks 🤣
I can’t wait to dive into book 2 and see what mystery they solve next.

Queen of Historical Fiction? Another 5-star by the amazing Kristin Hannah.

Anya was such a fascinating character to me. I found her defiance, silence and altogether strength breathtaking at times.
The things she does for her children and the journey to carry on is what made this book so emotional for me as a daughter and mother to two myself.
Finishing this book at 1am and trying not to cry too loud so I didn’t wake my spouse was a challenge.
If you haven’t picked up a Kristin Hannah book, what are you waiting for??

This book is marketed as “fast-paced, thrilling and emotional” but I disagree and the alternating timelines made the majority of it very drawn out.

Atmosphere just didn’t hook me personally, but I think it’s probably an amazing book for so many other readers. Give it a read and let me know what you think.
